Bible

A high-school year in 180 lessons: hermeneutics, systematic theology, formal logic and apologetics, Reformation history, and applied ethics.

About this course

Ninth grade is the first genuinely high school Bible course. The survey strands stop retelling stories and start reading books theologically: Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 as testimony to Christ, Ecclesiastes, the covenants as the backbone of the Old Testament, the tabernacle as a type, Romans and Galatians on justification, Hebrews on the priesthood of Christ, and how each testament's canon came to be recognized. Bible study skills become formal hermeneutics, with exegesis and eisegesis defined and distinguished, genre recognition, figures of speech, the difference between descriptive and prescriptive passages, responsible use of original-language word studies, and an introduction to systematic theology including a full lesson on the doctrine of the Trinity and the errors it rules out.

Apologetics is taught as a discipline rather than a set of answers. It covers deductive logic and named informal fallacies, natural theology, the Kalam cosmological argument, the fine-tuning argument, the moral argument, Van Til's presuppositional method, C. S. Lewis and the trilemma, the New Atheist writers and how to respond to them, the historical case for the resurrection, and the problem of evil treated as the serious objection it is. Church history focuses on the Reformation in depth, including Luther's breakthrough, his debate with Erasmus over the will, Zwingli and the Marburg Colloquy, Calvin and the five solas, the Anabaptists, Tyndale, and then the Great Awakening, the modern missionary movement, Christianity in America, and the persecuted church today.

The course is 180 lessons across 15 units, one per school day, at about 30 minutes each. A lesson is a piece of academic prose under headings that defines its technical vocabulary, quotes and cites the King James text, and names the thinkers involved. Every lesson ends with a ten-question multiple-choice quiz that grades itself. The ethics units are where a parent will want to be present: they take up abortion and end-of-life care with a clearly stated pro-life conviction, along with bioethics and genetic engineering, artificial intelligence and social media, economic justice, business ethics, capital punishment, and sexual ethics from a biblical foundation. Where Christians have genuinely long disagreed, such as just war versus nonresistance, the course lays out both traditions with respect and leaves the conclusion to you and your family.

Applying the Worldview Grid to Film and Media

Film is the dominant narrative art form of the 20th and 21st centuries. By age 18, the average American has watched thousands of hours of film and television — far more time than they have spent reading, in church, or in deliberate conversation. This means film is one of the most powerful worldview-shaping forces in contemporary culture, and most people absorb its assumptions without awareness.

How Film Communicates Worldview

Film communicates worldview not primarily through explicit dialogue but through what it shows us: which characters are sympathetic and which are villains; what behaviors lead to good outcomes and which to bad ones; what the camera lingers on and what it treats as shameful or admirable; how love, family, heroism, and death are portrayed.

Case Study: Science Fiction and Human Nature

Science fiction is particularly rich in worldview content because it uses hypothetical futures or alien civilizations to comment on human nature. The Star Trek franchise is built on an Enlightenment/naturalist worldview: humanity, freed from poverty and religion by advanced technology, has evolved morally into a peaceful, cooperative species. The problem was ignorance and poverty; the solution is science; the destiny is progress. This is an optimistic naturalism.

By contrast, Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" (novel and film) presents a post-apocalyptic world stripped of civilization to reveal human nature as a mixture of terrible darkness and stubborn, unexplained love. The father's love for his son has no naturalistic justification — it is not adaptive in this environment — and yet it persists and constitutes the moral center of the story.

The News Media and Worldview

News media embed worldview assumptions in every story: what stories are selected (what is considered important?), how they are framed (who is the hero? who is the villain?), what words are used (what language shapes how readers feel about the subject?), and what is omitted.

Reading news media critically means asking: What worldview assumptions are embedded here? What is this story implying about human nature, the cause of social problems, and the proper solution? Does the framing match the evidence?

Homework

Read the Bible passage again. Write or tell about what Worldview - Lesson 7 teaches us.

Note for the parent

Today's lesson covers Worldview - Lesson 7. Estimated time: 30 minutes. Encourage independent work but be available for questions.

The first three of this lesson's 10 questions

How does film communicate worldview differently from written literature, according to this lesson?

  1. Film communicates worldview through images, music, camera work, editing, and story structure — often bypassing critical thinking through emotional immersion
  2. Film uses only explicit dialogue to convey worldview
  3. Film is less influential than literature because it is entertainment
  4. Film cannot convey worldview since it is a visual medium
Show the answer

Answer: Film communicates worldview through images, music, camera work, editing, and story structure — often bypassing critical thinking through emotional immersion

According to this lesson, why is film especially powerful as a worldview-shaping force?

  1. Because most people spend far more hours watching film than reading or attending church, absorbing its assumptions without awareness
  2. Because it requires more intelligence than books
  3. Because filmmakers are more skilled than authors at communicating ideas
  4. Because film is the only art form that can portray reality accurately
Show the answer

Answer: Because most people spend far more hours watching film than reading or attending church, absorbing its assumptions without awareness

What worldview question does a film's 'hero' or 'protagonist' typically embody, according to this lesson?

  1. The origin of the universe
  2. The political ideology of the filmmaker
  3. The nature of God
  4. What a human being should be — the film's ideal of humanity and what constitutes a good life
Show the answer

Answer: What a human being should be — the film's ideal of humanity and what constitutes a good life

Another 7 questions follow in the lesson itself, each one graded the moment it is answered.
