Grade 10 · 15 units · 180 lessons · 1,800 questions

Bible

180 lessons of theology, spiritual disciplines, church history, apologetics, applied ethics, and comparative worldview including world religions.

About this course

Tenth grade organizes the year around questions rather than around the storyline. The Old Testament unit opens with theodicy and works through the psalms of lament, Habakkuk's complaint, the biblical meaning of shalom, the wisdom of Ecclesiastes, the Song of Solomon, Israel among the surrounding religions, and the exile as national theodicy. The New Testament units compare the four Gospels as four deliberate portraits, then move through Paul's Christology, Romans, Galatians, Hebrews, the letters of John, and Revelation read as the unveiling of Christ rather than as a puzzle. The Bible study strand is largely systematic and biblical theology: the doctrine of God and the Trinity, the doctrine of Scripture including inspiration, inerrancy, and canon, the doctrine of humanity and the image of God, plus hermeneutics, genre, word studies, translation philosophy and how the King James Version came to be, and the difference between devotional reading and academic study. The character strand covers the classical spiritual disciplines, including prayer, Scripture intake, fasting, solitude and silence, service, and hospitality.

The most distinctive unit is worldview, which is essentially comparative religion. It examines secular humanism, Marxism, postmodernism, New Age spirituality, Islam with its Five Pillars and the specific point where it and Christianity cannot be reconciled, and Hinduism and Buddhism, and it also turns the same tools on the Anabaptist tradition itself, asking your student to identify its distinctives and then honestly evaluate where it may overstate or understate biblical teaching. Apologetics covers the cosmological, ontological, teleological, and moral arguments, the minimal-facts case for the resurrection, manuscript evidence, and presuppositional method.

The course is 180 lessons across 15 units, one per school day, at about 30 minutes each. A typical lesson is roughly 400 words of dense theological prose with the King James text cited throughout, and about half the lessons add a written assignment, often a one- or two-page research summary or a memory verse. Every lesson ends with a ten-question multiple-choice quiz that grades itself. Expect real writing this year beyond the quizzes, and expect your student to encounter other religions described accurately in their own terms before the course explains where it disagrees.

What this lesson is for

  • Students will learn about how Worldview - lesson 7
  • Students will memorize the day's Bible verse
  • Students will apply the lesson to daily life

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

Islam is the world's second-largest religion with approximately 1.8 billion adherents. Understanding Islam is essential for Christians who live in an increasingly globalized world and who are called to love their Muslim neighbors. Islam was founded in the 7th century AD by Muhammad (570–632 AD), who claimed to receive revelations from Allah through the angel Gabriel. These revelations were compiled after Muhammad's death into the Quran. Muslims believe the Quran is the literal, uncorrupted word of God in Arabic, superseding all previous revelations including the Bible (which they believe has been corrupted).

The Five Pillars of Islam are: (1) Shahada — the declaration of faith: "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet." (2) Salat — prayer five times daily facing Mecca. (3) Zakat — almsgiving (2.5% of savings annually). (4) Sawm — fasting during the month of Ramadan. (5) Hajj — pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if able. These practices structure Muslim life and identity. Islam shares significant content with Christianity and Judaism: monotheism, a personal God who reveals himself, creation, moral accountability, final judgment. Muslims revere Jesus (Isa) as a great prophet, born of a virgin — but deny that He is the Son of God or that He died on the cross.

The fundamental difference between Christianity and Islam is the identity of Jesus Christ. In Islam, Jesus is a prophet — a great one, born of a virgin, who performed miracles — but He is not the Son of God, He did not die on the cross (a substitute died in His place), and He did not rise from the dead. For Christians, these denials strike at the heart of the gospel: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). The resurrection is the central Christian claim — its denial makes Islam and Christianity irreconcilable at the most fundamental level, not merely on secondary matters.

Activity: Research the life of Muhammad and the origins of Islam using reliable sources (include both Muslim and Christian scholarly sources). Write a two-page summary: Who was Muhammad? What were the key events of his life? How does the Quran's composition differ from that of the Bible? Then write a one-page Christian response: With genuine respect and without contempt, explain the key theological differences between Christianity and Islam, particularly on the question of who Jesus is. Memorize John 14:6.
