Bible

A chronological walk through the whole Bible in 180 lessons, from Genesis to Revelation, plus prayer and witness.

About this course

Fourth grade drops the rotating-strand format of the earlier years and instead walks straight through the Bible in order. Fifteen units follow the storyline: Creation and the Fall, the patriarchs from Abraham to Joseph, Moses and the Exodus including the Passover and the tabernacle, Joshua and the judges, the kings from Saul through Solomon, the divided kingdom with Elijah and Elisha and Jonah, the prophets, the exile and the return under Cyrus and Nehemiah, and then the ministry of Jesus, His parables, His miracles, the passion and resurrection, the early church in Acts, Paul's missionary journeys, and finally a book-by-book pass through Paul's letters, the general epistles, and Revelation. Three closing units turn practical: Christian character, prayer and devotional life, and sharing your faith at home, at school, and in your community.

The year is 180 lessons across 18 units, one per school day, at about 20 minutes each. A lesson is a page of narrative teaching that quotes the King James text directly and keeps the historical detail in place, the names of kings and cities and the numbers of years, followed by a short section drawing out the spiritual point. Every lesson ends with a ten-question multiple-choice quiz that grades itself. Nothing is needed beyond a Bible, a pencil, and paper, though the prayer unit asks your student to actually keep a quiet-time journal and try a daily habit of ten or fifteen minutes.

This is a reading-heavy year and it assumes your student reads at grade level and can hold a long narrative across several days. It also assumes some Bible familiarity, since it moves at a good clip and rarely stops to reintroduce a name met earlier. The difficult material is handled plainly and without sensationalism: the plagues, the death of the firstborn, Samson, the fall of Israel to Assyria, and the crucifixion are all told honestly and briefly, and each is connected back to the larger story of rescue. Where the Passover and the sacrificial lamb are taught, the course points forward to Christ, which is the thread it uses to hold the two testaments together.

Matthew 5:16

The Greatest Sermon Ever Preached

One day, seeing the multitudes, Jesus went up on a mountain and sat down. His disciples came to Him, and He began to teach them. The result was the Sermon on the Mount — recorded in Matthew 5 through 7 — the most famous and far-reaching sermon in history. These chapters contain some of Jesus's deepest and most challenging teachings about what it means to live in God's kingdom.

The Great Themes

The Sermon on the Mount covers an astonishing range of topics. It begins with the Beatitudes — eight blessings that describe the character of kingdom citizens. Jesus then teaches that His followers are "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:13-14). He addresses the law of Moses, saying He came not to destroy it but to fulfill it — and He raises the standard higher, teaching about anger (which He compares to murder in the heart), lust, divorce, oaths, and retaliation.

Love Your Enemies

One of the most counter-cultural teachings is Jesus's command to love your enemies: "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you" (Matthew 5:44). The world says to love your friends and hate your enemies. Jesus says to love everyone — because that is what God does, causing His sun to rise on the evil and the good.

Giving, Prayer, and Fasting

Jesus teaches about the three great religious practices: giving (alms), prayer, and fasting — but warns against doing any of them to be seen by others. "Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth" for giving (Matthew 6:3). He gives the Lord's Prayer as a model. He teaches not to worry about material things: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33).

The Crowd's Reaction

When Jesus finished, the crowds were amazed: "For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes" (Matthew 7:28-29). The scribes quoted other rabbis. Jesus spoke with His own divine authority.

Spiritual Lesson

The Sermon on the Mount shows that following Jesus is about inward transformation, not just outward religious performance. Jesus is not just a teacher of good morals — He is the Lord who demands our whole heart. He calls us to a higher standard and promises that with His help, we can live it.

Homework
