Fifty-eight lessons covering Creation week, Old Testament heroes, David and the Psalms, the life of Jesus, and prayer.
About this course
First grade widens out from the storybook favorites into something closer to a survey. It opens with Creation taken one day at a time, then adds the Fall and God's plan of redemption. The Old Testament unit moves quickly through Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Esau, Joseph sold into Egypt, Moses, Joshua at Jericho, and Ruth. A full unit belongs to David, and it does not stop at Goliath: it covers his friendship with Jonathan, his becoming king, his sin and his repentance, and what a psalm actually is, working through Psalm 23, Psalm 32, and Psalm 34. The life of Jesus unit runs from His birth and baptism through the calling of the disciples, the lost sheep, the healings, walking on the water, the Last Supper, and the crucifixion and resurrection. The year closes with the nine fruits of the Spirit one at a time and eight lessons on prayer, including a line-by-line walk through the Lord's Prayer.
There are 6 units and 58 lessons in all, planned at about 15 minutes each. It is still a read-aloud course. The teaching page is written for you to read to your student, with "say to your child" and "ask your child" prompts, direct instructions to open a Bible to the passage under discussion, a KJV memory verse, and a drawing or hands-on activity such as putting the lines of the Lord's Prayer back in order from paper strips. Each lesson ends with a ten-question multiple-choice quiz that grades itself.
A beginning reader can follow along, but nothing in the course requires independent reading; you and your family will still be doing the reading in most lessons. All quotations are King James, and the harder parts are not skipped. Joseph's brothers selling him, David's sin with the resulting repentance, and the crucifixion are all told honestly at a first-grade level and then pointed back toward forgiveness and the resurrection. A Bible, a pencil, and crayons are the only materials.

What this lesson is for

The student will memorize the day's Bible verse
The student will apply the lesson to daily life
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23
David's Heart for God
What made David special? Not his size, not his strength — but his HEART for God.
Open your Bible to Acts 13:22. God called David "a man after mine own heart." That is one of the greatest compliments in the entire Bible! It means David wanted what God wanted. He cared about the things God cared about. He loved God with his whole heart, even though he was far from perfect.
Say to your child: "David wrote many of the Psalms, and in them we can see his heart. He praised God when things were good. He cried out to God when things were hard. He confessed his sins honestly. He trusted God completely. He wanted to be close to God MORE than he wanted anything else in the world."
Ask your child: "What do you think it means to have a heart for God? How can YOU love God with your whole heart? What is one thing you want to tell God right now, just between you and Him?"
Psalm 27:4 shows David's heart: "One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life." David's deepest desire was to be WITH God. Not to have a bigger palace. Not to win more battles. Just to be with God.
Activity: Draw a large open heart in the center of a page. Inside the heart, help your child write or draw the things they love about God — His love, His care, His protection, His forgiveness. Write "My heart for God" at the top.
Memory Verse: "One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after." (Psalm 27:4a)
Encourage your child: God sees YOUR heart, just like He saw David's. Ask God today to give you a heart that loves Him more and more every day!
