History & Geography

The full survey at high school depth, from Jamestown and Mesopotamia to today's contested moral and policy debates.

About this course

Ninth grade is the first of the high school years and it is a full 180 lessons in 15 units of twelve, at about 50 minutes each. The first eight units cover the familiar ground at a new level. American history runs from Jamestown and the Pilgrims through the Revolution, the Constitutional Convention, the War of 1812, Manifest Destiny, the Civil War, Lincoln, and Reconstruction, closing with a lesson on how the founding generation talked about Providence. World civilizations runs Mesopotamia through Egypt, Greece, and Rome to Byzantium, the Islamic caliphates, medieval Europe, the Crusades, and the Renaissance. Government covers the origins of American political thought, Congress, presidential power, Article III, federalism, civil liberties, the two-party system, and foreign policy. Economics is a genuine high school sequence: scarcity and opportunity cost, economic systems, supply and demand, market structures, consumer finance, labor markets, money and the Federal Reserve, GDP and business cycles, fiscal policy, and trade. Cultural studies takes up the Christian roots of Western civilization, the Enlightenment, postmodernism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism, secularism, popular culture, globalization, and American exceptionalism.

The last seven units go deeper and add ground most surveys skip. American history returns to the Native nations before Jamestown, Roanoke, the Great Awakening, Hamilton against Jefferson, the Louisiana Purchase, the Missouri Compromise, the antebellum reform movements, the Gilded Age, and Ellis Island. World civilizations adds ancient China and the Mandate of Heaven, the Indus Valley, Charlemagne, the Mongol Empire, the West African kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai with Mansa Musa and the libraries of Timbuktu, feudal Japan, and the Aztec and Inca. Advanced civics takes on natural law theory, constitutional interpretation, the administrative state, Supreme Court reform proposals, nullification and sanctuary cities, and a closing lesson comparing Lutheran two-kingdoms doctrine, Reformed sphere sovereignty, the Anabaptist church-world distinction, and liberation theology, naming the characteristic failure of each.

A lesson is a thousand to fourteen hundred words of analytical prose with key terms in bold, primary sources quoted at length, a Scripture passage, and frequently a two-page essay assignment as the activity. The ten-question multiple-choice quiz at the end of each lesson grades itself; the essays do not, so those come back to you. You should know that the current events unit engages contemporary moral and policy questions head-on: artificial intelligence, climate science and climate policy, bioethics, racial justice, the persecuted church, and abortion after the Dobbs decision. That lesson lays out the biological facts, the competing definitions of personhood, and the historic Christian position, and it asks your student to argue the pro-life case in writing. The course assumes a reader ready for real argument and a willingness on your part to talk through what comes up.

Abortion: The Central Moral Question of Our Time

The abortion debate in the United States was dramatically reshaped in June 2022 when the Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision overturned Roe v. Wade (1973), returning the abortion question to state legislatures. Understanding this issue requires both philosophical depth and factual accuracy.

The Biological Question

Biologically, the facts are not in dispute: at fertilization, a genetically distinct, living human organism comes into existence. This organism, if left undisturbed, will naturally develop through embryo and fetal stages into a newborn and eventually an adult. The question is not whether the developing human is alive and human — it is — but whether it is a person with rights that must be legally protected.

The Philosophical Question

The debate turns on when personhood begins. Positions include:

  • Conception: A new human life begins at fertilization; all human lives have equal dignity
  • Viability: Around 22–24 weeks, when the fetus can survive outside the womb
  • Birth: Legal personhood begins at birth
  • Sentience/brain development: When the capacity to feel pain or have conscious experience emerges

Each position has implications: the conception view prohibits all abortion; the viability and birth views allow abortion before those thresholds.

The Christian View

Scripture does not use the modern word "abortion," but its principles are clear:

  • Psalm 139:13–16: God forms humans in the womb; David uses personal pronouns ("me," "I") for himself in the womb
  • Jeremiah 1:5: "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee" — God knew Jeremiah as a person before birth
  • Luke 1:41–44: John the Baptist leaped in the womb at Mary's greeting — recognized as a person
  • Exodus 21:22–25: Causing the death of an unborn child carries legal penalties in Mosaic law

The Christian tradition has consistently affirmed the sanctity of human life from conception. The Roman church's Didache (c. 100 AD) explicitly condemned abortion. The Reformers and Puritans uniformly opposed it. Most evangelical and Anabaptist Christians today hold the pro-life position.

The Post-Dobbs Political Reality

Since Dobbs, abortion law varies dramatically by state — some states protect life at conception; others allow abortion through all nine months. The political debate continues.

Activity: Write a two-page essay arguing the pro-life position from a biblical and philosophical perspective. Address: (1) When does human life begin? (2) What does Scripture say? (3) What is the strongest objection to the pro-life view, and how would you respond? (4) What obligations do pro-life Christians have beyond opposing abortion legally?

Homework

Answer the review questions about Current events - lesson 7.

Note for the parent

Today's lesson covers Current Events - Lesson 7. Estimated time: 50 minutes. Encourage independent work but be available for questions.

The first three of this lesson's 10 questions

The Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson decision (2022) did which of the following?

  1. Established a federal right to abortion
  2. Banned all abortions in the United States
  3. Overturned Roe v. Wade and returned abortion law to state legislatures
  4. Required states to provide abortion funding
Show the answer

Answer: Overturned Roe v. Wade and returned abortion law to state legislatures

Biologically, what happens at fertilization?

  1. A potential human life begins — not yet actually human
  2. A genetically distinct, living human organism comes into existence
  3. A mass of undifferentiated cells forms that becomes human at birth
  4. A person is created fully-formed
Show the answer

Answer: A genetically distinct, living human organism comes into existence

The philosophical question at the center of the abortion debate is:

  1. Whether the developing human is alive and human
  2. Whether abortion should be legal
  3. When personhood begins and which human lives deserve legal protection
  4. Whether men should have a say in abortion decisions
Show the answer

Answer: When personhood begins and which human lives deserve legal protection

Another 7 questions follow in the lesson itself, each one graded the moment it is answered.
