Science

A first look at weather, plants, animals, the human body, and the sky, read aloud in 40 short lessons.

About this course

Kindergarten science here is mostly noticing. Your student starts by sorting living things from non-living things and learning what the five senses are for, then spends a unit each on weather and the four seasons, the parts of a plant and how a seed germinates, animals in the house and on the farm and in the wild, the human body inside and out, and finally the sun, moon, stars, rocks, and water. The vocabulary is real (observation, embryo, germinate, organs by name) but it is always explained in the same breath, and the tone throughout is that creation was designed and is worth looking at closely.

There are 40 lessons in 6 units, which is roughly one science lesson a week over a standard school year rather than daily work. Each one is written to take about 25 minutes and opens with a note that says plainly: parent, read this to your student. A lesson runs a short prayer, a wonder question to get talking, a page or so of read-aloud teaching, a hands-on observation, and then drawing or writing down what was seen. Every lesson carries a King James verse tied to the day's subject and ends with a ten-question multiple-choice quiz that grades itself.

The listed materials are pencil, paper, and crayons, and the activities are built around things already in the house or the yard: a sense safari through the rooms, a bean seed planted in a clear cup by a sunny window, counting heartbeats before and after jumping, watching the weather each morning. Nothing needs to be ordered. This course assumes no reading ability at all on your student's part, since you or another adult will be doing the reading, and it assumes someone will be sitting nearby for the 25 minutes. The drawing assignment at the end of each lesson is not graded by the site, so what your student produces is yours to look over.

Unit 4: Animals · Lesson 1

Animals God Created

25 minutesPencilPaperCrayons

What this lesson is for

  • The student will explore and observe Animals God Created
  • The student will describe what they learned about God's creation

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 1:27

Animals God Created

God made every kind of animal on Days 5 and 6 of creation!

"And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good." — Genesis 1:25

Parent: Read the verse aloud twice slowly. Tell your child: "God did not make just one animal — He made KINDS. Dogs are one kind, cats are another. Each kind has baby animals that look just like their parents. A dog will never give birth to a cat, because God made every kind to stay its own kind."

What to know:

  • God created animals before He made people
  • Animals that walk on land, swim in water, and fly in the sky — God made them all
  • Each animal was made "after his kind" — cats have kittens, horses have foals, birds have chicks
  • God looked at the animals He made and said they were very good (Genesis 1:31)
  • Adam's first job was to name every animal God brought to him (Genesis 2:19-20)

Animal kinds to name together: dog, cat, horse, cow, fish, bird, frog, butterfly, deer, elephant

Observation Activity: Go outside or look out a window. Can you spot any animal? It might be a bird, a bug, a squirrel, or a pet. Point to it and say: "God made that!"

Draw your favorite animal in your notebook. Under it, write (or have parent write): "God made the ___."

Review Questions:

  • On which days did God make animals?
  • What does "after his kind" mean?
  • What was Adam's first job?
  • Can you name three different kinds of animals?

Homework

Draw a picture of what you learned about Animals God created.

Note for the parent

This lesson on Animals God Created should take about 25 minutes. Stay nearby to help with reading and questions. Praise effort and progress.
