The Nervous System: God's Control Center
Say to your child: "Your brain is the most complex structure in the known universe. It controls everything you think, feel, sense, and do — and it does it all at lightning speed. God designed the nervous system as the master control center of your body."
The nervous system has two main parts:
The Central Nervous System (CNS) — made up of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is the command center. It receives information, makes decisions, stores memories, controls emotions, and sends instructions to the rest of the body. The human brain has about 86 billion nerve cells called neurons. The spinal cord is a thick bundle of nerves running down your backbone, connecting the brain to the rest of the body.
The Peripheral Nervous System — a network of nerves that spreads through your entire body. These nerves carry messages between the brain/spinal cord and all your muscles and organs.
Nerve signals travel as electrical impulses — some up to 268 miles per hour! When you touch a hot stove, nerves send a signal to your spinal cord, which sends a reflex signal back to your hand before the message even reaches your brain — that is why you pull away so fast!
The brain has different regions: the cerebrum handles thinking, memory, and movement; the cerebellum manages balance and coordination; the brain stem controls automatic functions like heartbeat and breathing.
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding." — Proverbs 3:5
Ask your child: "What is the difference between the brain and the spinal cord? How fast do nerve signals travel?"
Hands-On Activity: Test your reflexes! Have a parent hold a ruler vertically at the top. You hold your fingers near the bottom without touching it. When they drop it, catch it as fast as you can. Measure where you caught it — a lower catch means faster reaction time!
