History & Geography

A read-aloud introduction to family, neighborhood, country, and holidays in 23 short lessons.

About this course

Kindergarten social studies here is not dates and timelines. It starts with what your student already knows and works outward in four steps. The first unit is about the student and the family: full name and age, home, the fact that families are put together in different ways, family traditions, and that God gave each person the family they have. The second unit is the neighborhood, covering what a community is and the people who serve one, including police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, teachers, and the local church, closing with what it means to be a good neighbor. The third unit is a first look at America, with the flag and what its colors, stars, and stripes stand for, the Pledge of Allegiance, who our leaders are, why we pray for them, and gratitude for freedom. The last unit walks through Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Independence Day, and the days a family celebrates on its own, such as birthdays and anniversaries.

There are 23 lessons in all, spread over those four units, at roughly 25 minutes each. This is a short course by design, so it will not fill a slot every school day for a whole year. The lesson text is written as a script for you rather than for the student to read alone. It tells you what to say, gives you three or four questions to ask out loud, supplies a King James verse and a short memory line to repeat together, and ends with a simple activity using paper and crayons or something already in the house, such as drawing a self-portrait, counting the stripes on a flag, or making a calendar of family birthdays. Most lessons close with a short spoken prayer. After the reading comes a ten-question multiple-choice quiz that grades itself.

Nothing is assumed coming in. Your student does not need to read, write, or know any history. Everything arrives through conversation and drawing. You should plan to sit alongside for the whole lesson and to read the quiz questions aloud, since a kindergartner will usually not be able to work through them independently. Along the way you and your family may want to talk about your own traditions and holidays, since several lessons deliberately turn the discussion back to your household.

What this lesson is for

  • The student will learn about Being a good neighbor
  • The student will understand how people live together in communities

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority.

1 Timothy 2:1-2

Being a Good Neighbor

A Note to Parents: This final community lesson teaches children practical ways to love their neighbors, grounded in the two greatest commandments. Read aloud and brainstorm a real action your family can take.

Bible Verse: "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." Matthew 22:39 (KJV)

Tell Your Child:

A neighbor is anyone who lives near you — and in Jesus' teaching, a neighbor is anyone who needs your help! Jesus told a story called "The Good Samaritan" about a man who helped a stranger who was hurt on the road. The helper was the true neighbor.

Ask your child:

  • "Who are our actual neighbors?"
  • "How can we show love to someone who lives near us?"
  • "Have you ever helped a neighbor?"

Ways to Be a Good Neighbor:

Say hello and smile. A friendly greeting makes people feel welcome and seen.

Help with small things. Carry a bag of groceries. Help pick up something dropped. Hold a door open.

Share. Share garden vegetables. Share baked goods. Share tools you are not using.

Check on elderly neighbors. Older people sometimes need help and love the company of children!

Invite neighbors to church. The best thing you can share is the Good News of Jesus.

Keep your yard tidy. A clean, neat yard is a gift to everyone who walks by.

Do not gossip or complain. Kind words build community; mean words tear it apart. "A soft answer turneth away wrath." (Proverbs 15:1)

The Story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37):

A man was robbed and left hurt on the road. Two important religious people walked right past him! But a Samaritan (someone people did not expect to be kind) stopped, helped, and paid for the man's care. Jesus said: "Go, and do thou likewise."

Activity: Do Something for a Neighbor This Week

As a family, decide on one kind act for a real neighbor:

  • Bake cookies and deliver them
  • Write a note saying "We are glad you are our neighbor"
  • Offer to help with yard work
  • Simply wave and say hello every day this week

Closing Prayer: "Dear God, help us to love our neighbors the way You love us. Give us eyes to see who needs help today. Make our home a place of welcome and kindness. Amen."
