Unit 7: Physics Basics · Lesson 1
Physics Basics - Lesson 1
What this lesson is for
- Students will explore and observe Physics Basics - Lesson 1
- Students will describe what they learned about God's creation
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Psalm 19:1
Forces: Pushes and Pulls
Physics is the study of matter, energy, and how they interact — it is the study of how God's physical universe operates. At the heart of physics is the concept of force: a push or pull that can change an object's motion or shape.
What is a force?
- A force is an interaction between two objects
- Forces have both magnitude (size) and direction — they are vector quantities
- Forces are measured in Newtons (N) — named after Sir Isaac Newton
- 1 Newton is roughly the force needed to hold a small apple in your hand against gravity
Contact vs. non-contact forces:
Contact forces require physical touching:
- Applied force — a push or pull directly applied (pushing a door, pulling a rope)
- Friction — a force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact
- Normal force — perpendicular force a surface exerts on an object resting on it (the table pushes up on a book just as hard as gravity pulls the book down)
- Tension — force transmitted through a rope, string, or cable
- Spring force — force exerted by a compressed or stretched spring
Non-contact forces act at a distance:
- Gravity — attractive force between all objects with mass; Earth pulls everything toward its center
- Magnetic force — attraction or repulsion between magnetic poles
- Electrostatic force — attraction or repulsion between electric charges
Net force: When multiple forces act on an object, the net force is the sum of all forces. If forces are equal and opposite, net force = 0 and the object does not accelerate (it is in equilibrium).
- Book on a table: gravity pulls it down (10N), normal force pushes it up (10N) → net force = 0 → the book stays still.
Forces explain why objects move, stop, speed up, slow down, or stay put — they are the language God built into the mechanics of the universe.
