Unit 7: Physics Basics · Lesson 1
Physics Basics - Lesson 1
What this lesson is for
- Students will explore and observe Physics Basics - Lesson 1
- Students will describe what they learned about God's creation
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Introduction to Motion
Physics is the study of matter, energy, and the forces that govern their interaction. It is the most fundamental of the natural sciences — chemistry, biology, and engineering all rest upon physical principles. Studying physics is studying the consistent laws God built into creation.
Motion is a change in position of an object over time. Describing motion requires several key concepts:
- Position — where an object is located, measured relative to a reference point
- Distance — the total length of the path traveled (scalar quantity — only magnitude)
- Displacement — the straight-line distance and direction from start to end (vector quantity — magnitude AND direction)
- Speed — how fast an object moves; Speed = Distance ÷ Time
- Velocity — speed in a specific direction (vector)
- Acceleration — rate of change of velocity; Acceleration = (Change in velocity) ÷ Time
An object accelerates whenever its speed changes OR its direction changes. A car turning a corner at constant speed is still accelerating (its direction is changing).
Graphs of motion:
- Distance-time graph — slope = speed
- Velocity-time graph — slope = acceleration; area under curve = distance
Reference frames: All motion is measured relative to a chosen reference point. A passenger on a train appears motionless to others on the train but is moving rapidly relative to someone standing on the platform. This is the principle of relative motion.
God created a universe in which motion follows consistent mathematical laws — discoverable by human minds made in His image. Psalm 19:1–2 declares that creation "day unto day uttereth speech" — the language of motion is one such speech. Physics is learning to hear it.
