Spanish
A gentle first taste of Spanish: greetings, colors, numbers to ten, and family words in 21 short lessons.
About this course
The language taught here is Spanish, and Kindergarten is a first introduction rather than a course of study. Four short units cover greetings (hola, adios, buenos dias, como estas, gracias, por favor, si, no, and me llamo), the six basic colors, counting from uno to diez, and family words such as mama, papa, hermano, hermana, familia, and amigos. The last lesson teaches the phrase Dios te ama, God loves you, which is the note the year ends on.
There are 21 lessons in all, so this is a light subject you can spread across the year rather than a daily one. Each lesson is planned for about 15 minutes and follows the same simple shape: a short prayer, a few sentences introducing two or three new words, practice, and a quick review. The reading is only three or four sentences long and gives the pronunciation in plain English respelling, such as hola (OH-lah) and adios (ah-dee-OHS). Every lesson ends with a ten-question quiz that grades itself, mostly matching a Spanish word to its English meaning. The suggested homework each time is to say the day's words out loud to someone in the family, and a KJV verse is attached to each lesson.
Two honest notes before you choose it. There is no audio anywhere in this course, and no recorded speaker, so the pronunciation your student learns will be whatever you read aloud from the respellings. Plan to sit beside your student for these lessons and say the words together. It also assumes no Spanish at all coming in, and it does not teach reading or writing in Spanish, sentence building, or grammar. What your student comes away with is a small spoken vocabulary and a warm first impression of another language.

Parent: Read this to your child.
You have been learning Spanish colors all week! Today we review them all.
Rojo ๐ด (ROH-hoh) is red. Apples are rojo. Azul ๐ต (ah-ZOOL) is blue. The sky is azul. Verde ๐ข (VAIR-deh) is green. Grass is verde. Amarillo ๐ก (ah-mah-REE-yoh) is yellow. The sun is amarillo.
Blanco โช (BLAHN-koh) is white. Snow is blanco. Negro โซ (NEH-groh) is black. Night is negro. Naranja ๐ (nah-RAHN-hah) is orange. Oranges are naranja. Morado ๐ฃ (moh-RAH-doh) is purple. Grapes can be morado.
How many Spanish colors did we learn? Rojo, azul, verde, amarillo, blanco, negro, naranja, and morado. That is eight colors! You know eight colors in Spanish now!
Which Spanish color word means the color of the sky? The answer is azul. You can point to things and say their colors in Spanish! At the store, point to red apples and say rojo. See a green plant? Say verde. You should be proud!
Learning Spanish words every day helps them stick in your memory. God made many languages โ learning one is a gift!
Ask your child: Can you say all eight colors? Can you point to things and say their colors?
Practice saying today's Spanish words to a family member.
