Mathematics

Counting to 20, shapes, patterns, adding and subtracting within 10, and measuring, in 59 parent-led lessons.

About this course

Kindergarten math starts at the very beginning. The first three units build the numbers themselves: counting and writing 1 through 5, then 6 through 10, then the teen numbers to 20, with practice in one-more and one-less, comparing which group has more, putting numbers in order, filling a ten frame, and taking a first look at tens and ones. From there the year moves to shapes (circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, spotting them around the house, sorting them, and building them), patterns (AB, ABC, color patterns, number patterns, patterns in nature, and making up an original one), addition within 10 (putting groups together, adding 1 and 2, adding with pictures, and simple story problems), subtraction within 10 (taking away, counting how many are left, and subtraction stories), and a closing measurement unit on long and short, tall and small, heavy and light, comparing sizes, morning and night, and the days of the week.

The course is 59 lessons across 8 units, which is a shorter run than the full 180-day courses in later grades and is meant to be taken at whatever pace suits a five-year-old. A lesson is planned for about 35 minutes and is written to be led out loud by you rather than read silently by your student: a short prayer, a review of yesterday, the new idea taught with beans, blocks, fingers, or household objects, guided practice together, and a few minutes of independent work. Each lesson closes with a ten-question quiz that grades itself, and the questions are read-aloud simple. A KJV verse is tied to each day's topic, most often pointing to the order and pattern God built into creation.

Nothing is assumed coming in. Your student does not need to already know numbers, letters, or how to write, though a little rote counting and enough pencil control to trace a numeral will make the first unit go faster. Plan to sit with your student for the whole lesson. The listed materials are only pencil, paper, and an eraser, but nearly every lesson also calls for something you already have on hand, such as beans, buttons, blocks, cups, bowls, or a strip of paper, so a small basket of counting objects kept nearby is worth setting up before you begin.

Shape Patterns

What this lesson is for

  • The student will understand and practice Shape Patterns
  • The student will solve problems related to this topic

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

James 1:5

Shape Patterns

A pattern is something that repeats in the same order — again and again. We can make patterns using shapes!

Say it with your child: "Circle, square, circle, square — a pattern repeats!"

"For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace." — 1 Corinthians 14:33

God is a God of order, not confusion. His patterns are everywhere — the sun rises every morning, seasons return every year. Shape patterns train our minds to think with order and care, just like our Creator!

Parent — Teach it:

  • Draw: ○ □ ○ □ ○ □ — Point to each: "circle, square, circle, square, circle, square."
  • Ask: "What comes next?" Let your child answer before you draw it.
  • Try: △ ○ △ ○ △ — "What comes next?" (Circle!)
  • Try: □ △ ○ □ △ ○ — "What are A, B, C?" (Square, triangle, circle)

Pattern Strip Activity: Cut a long strip of paper. Ask your child to draw a repeating shape pattern across it — at least 8 shapes. Name the rule together!

Paper Shape Activity: Cut out 12 shapes: 4 circles, 4 squares, 4 triangles. Lay them in a pattern: circle, square, triangle, circle, square, triangle. Ask your child to copy the pattern next to yours, then extend it by 3 more.

Challenge Pattern: Draw: □ □ ○ □ □ ○ □ □ ___. Ask: "What rule do you see?" (Two squares, one circle!) "What comes next?" (Circle!)

Make-and-Guess Game: Parent draws a 6-shape pattern and covers the last 2. Child guesses what is hidden. Then switch!

Check for Understanding: Draw: △ ○ △ ○ △ ___. Ask: "What comes next?" (Circle!) "What is the rule?"

Shape patterns show us God's love of beautiful order — and they lead us into all of math!

Guided practice

  1. Pattern: ⚪⬜⚪⬜⚪___. What comes next?

Show the steps and the answer

Look at the pattern: circle then square, circle then square, circle then what? After each circle comes a square. So the answer is square.

    Answer: square

  2. Pattern. What shape comes next?

Show the steps and the answer

The pattern goes: triangle then circle, triangle then circle, triangle then what? After each triangle comes a circle. The answer is circle.

    Answer: circle

  3. Pattern: ⬜⬜⚪⬜⬜⚪⬜⬜___. What comes next?

Show the steps and the answer

The pattern is: 2 squares then 1 circle. It repeats. You see 2 squares then circle, 2 squares then circle, 2 squares then what? The answer is circle.

    Answer: circle

Homework

Complete the practice page. Count objects around your house.

Note for the parent

This lesson on Shape Patterns should take about 35 minutes. Stay nearby to help with reading and questions. Praise effort and progress.

The first three of this lesson's 10 questions

A pattern that goes ⚪⬜⚪⬜ is called an:

  1. AB pattern
  2. AAB pattern
  3. ABC pattern
  4. ABB pattern
Show the answer

Answer: AB pattern

Look at the pattern. What comes next?

  1. Circle
  2. Triangle
  3. Square
  4. Rectangle
Show the answer

Answer: Circle

⬜⚪⬜⚪ — this is an ___ pattern.

  1. AB
  2. ABC
  3. AAB
  4. ABB
Show the answer

Answer: AB

Another 7 questions follow in the lesson itself, each one graded the moment it is answered.
