Physical Education

Twenty-four short movement lessons covering basic locomotion, ball play, balance games, and everyday health habits.

About this course

Kindergarten PE and Health is the gentlest course in the grade, and it is meant to be done on the floor and in the yard rather than at a desk. Four units of six lessons each work through basic ways of moving (walking, running, jumping, hopping, skipping, galloping, crawling, rolling, and stretching), simple ball skills (throwing, catching, kicking, bouncing, rolling, and easy ball games), balance and coordination (standing on one foot, walking a line, an obstacle course, Simon Says, Follow the Leader), and health basics (washing hands, eating good food, drinking water, getting enough sleep, and staying clean). Each unit ends on a lesson that ties the physical to the spiritual, such as "God Made Us to Move" and "My Body is a Temple."

There are 24 lessons in all, and each one is planned for about 25 minutes: a short opening prayer, roughly five minutes of introducing the idea, about twelve minutes of actually doing it, and a brief review. The reading is very short by design, only three or four sentences a student can hear read aloud, so nearly all of the lesson time is spent moving. Every lesson closes with a ten-question quiz that grades itself, written at a kindergarten level and mixing simple multiple choice with true-or-false. A KJV verse, usually 1 Corinthians 6:19 or 10:31, is attached to each lesson with a one-line application.

Equipment is deliberately minimal: comfortable clothes, a water bottle, a playground or rubber ball, and enough open space to move around, indoors or out. The obstacle course lesson uses pillows, chairs, and toys already in the house. Each lesson suggests playing outside for fifteen minutes afterward. Plan to stay nearby, since a kindergartner will need you to read the lesson aloud and read the quiz questions with them, and much of the material (Simon Says, Follow the Leader, catching a ball) works best with a second person to play along.

Unit 3: Balance and Coordination · Lesson 1

Standing on One Foot

25 minutesA little open floor space; a wall nearby for safety

What this lesson is for

  • The student will stand on one foot for at least 5 seconds without support.
  • The student will try both feet and notice which side feels stronger.

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

1 Corinthians 6:19

Standing on One Foot

Today's Verse: "Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of him, and ye are not your own?" — 1 Corinthians 6:19

Parent: Read this to your child.

One of the amazing things our bodies can do is balance! Standing on one foot is a balance challenge that helps your muscles grow strong and teaches your body to stay steady and under control.

Hold your arms out to the side when you stand on one foot — this really does help you stay steady, so give it a try! Try to count to five while balancing. If you cannot yet, that is perfectly okay — it takes practice, and every time you try, you get better.

God made our bodies with the amazing ability to stand and balance. Practicing balance helps us move better in everyday life — when we walk, run, climb, or play. Thank God for the wonderful body He gave you!

Ask your child: Can you stand on one foot? What do your arms help you do while balancing?

Activity — Balance Challenge

Find a clear space in your living room, hallway, or yard with no toys to trip over. Wear shoes or socks for safety.

  • Stand on one foot and count slowly to five together. Then try the other foot.
  • Hold your arms out to help you stay steady — notice how it's easier?
  • If five is too hard, count to three, then try for four tomorrow.
  • Take turns — you balance while your child counts for you.
  • If your child wobbles, say: "God gave your body the power to learn. Let's try again!"

Safety reminder: Make sure the space is clear and safe. Stop if your leg or foot starts to hurt.

Homework

Show a family member your best one-foot balance and see if they can beat your count.
