Science

A survey year touching life, earth, physical, and space science plus the body, chemistry, physics, and stewardship.

About this course

First grade takes a wide sweep rather than a deep dig. Your student works through living and non-living things, plant parts and germination, farm and wild animals and insects; then land and water, rocks and soil, the water cycle, weather and seasons; then matter as solids, liquids, and gases, and how it changes; then the sun, moon, stars, the eight planets, the Milky Way, comets, and meteors; then bones, muscles, heart, lungs, brain, senses, digestion, and skin; then a plain-language chemistry unit on materials, dissolving, and how cooking changes food; then a physics unit on motion, speed, force, gravity, friction, levers, wheels, inclined planes, magnets, and basic electricity; and finally a stewardship unit on clean air and water, forests, pollution, and reducing, reusing, and recycling.

The course is 108 lessons in 9 units of 12. The ninth unit returns to the life science material from the first and covers it again lesson for lesson, so the last stretch of the year is review. Each lesson is written for about 25 minutes and is built to be read aloud: the text speaks directly to you with lines like "Say to your student" and "Ask your student," followed by a short read-aloud explanation, a King James verse tied to the topic, a hands-on activity, and a drawing to finish. Every lesson closes with a ten-question multiple-choice quiz that the site grades on its own.

Materials are listed as pencil, paper, and crayons, and the activities stay inside that budget. A bean seed sprouts against the side of a zip-lock bag taped to a window, a celery stalk sits in colored water so the stem shows its work, a ruler balanced on a pencil becomes a lever with a book for a load. Nothing needs to be purchased. The reading is done by you, so your student needs no reading fluency coming in, only the ability to sit and talk through a question. Real terms are introduced without apology (germination, photosynthesis, fulcrum, matter), each one defined the moment it appears.

What this lesson is for

  • The student will explore and observe Human Body - Lesson 7
  • The student will describe what they learned about God's creation

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Psalm 19:1

Eyes and Seeing — Windows to God's World

Say to your child: "Look around the room. Notice the colors, shapes, shadows, and movements. Your eyes are taking in all of that information right now and sending it to your brain! Your eyes are tiny — about the size of a marble — but they are incredibly complex and perfectly designed."

Our Bible verse is Proverbs 20:12 — "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them." God made your eyes. They are His gift to you!

Say to your child: "Light enters your eye through a small opening called the pupil — the dark circle in the center of your eye. A clear lens focuses the light onto the back of your eye, called the retina. Millions of tiny cells in the retina detect the light and color and send signals to your brain. Your brain then puts all the signals together into the pictures you see!"

Ask your child: "What is the dark circle in the center of your eye called?" (The pupil!) "Who made our eyes?" (God did!)

Say to your child: "Have you noticed your pupil can change size? In a dark room, your pupil gets large to let in as much light as possible. In bright sunlight, it gets very small to protect your eye. Your eye adjusts automatically — you do not have to think about it at all!"

Hands-on activity: Stand in a dim room for one minute, then quickly look in a mirror. Notice the size of your pupils. Then turn on the lights and watch them shrink! Try looking at something far away and then something very close — feel your eyes shift focus. God designed this automatic adjustment to happen thousands of times a day.

Key idea: Your eyes are a miraculous gift from God — precisely engineered to show you His beautiful world in color and detail.
