English Language Arts

The alphabet A to Z, then CVC words, sight words, and first sentences, in 56 parent-led lessons.

About this course

Kindergarten language arts here is a beginning reading course, and it starts at the true beginning. The first four units walk through all 26 letters one at a time, six to eight letters per unit, teaching the uppercase form, the lowercase form, the letter name, the sound it makes, three or four words that start with it, and how to form it stroke by stroke on paper. Unit 5 turns those sounds into words: short-a, short-e, short-i, short-o, and short-u CVC words such as cat, bed, pig, dog, and cup, followed by lessons on blending sounds together and on reading and writing whole words. Unit 6 introduces twelve sight words in groups of three (the, a, is, I, am, can, and, to, in, we, my, you) and then uses them in simple sentences and two short stories your student reads along with you. Unit 7 closes the year on handwriting itself, from the tripod pencil grip through writing a name, letters, words, and finally a complete sentence with a capital and a period.

There are 56 lessons across 7 units, not a full 180-day sequence, so this course is meant to be paced over the year alongside plenty of ordinary read-aloud time rather than to fill every school day. Each lesson is written for about 40 minutes and follows the same shape: a short prayer, a warm-up on letters already learned, the new teaching, hands-on practice, and a wrap-up. Most lessons include tracing directions, a KJV verse tied to the day's letter or idea, and a suggested activity using nothing but pencil, paper, and things already around the house. Every lesson ends with a ten-question multiple-choice quiz that grades itself.

Plan on doing this one beside your student rather than assigning it. The lesson text is addressed to you as much as to the reader, with notes like "Parent: first guide your child's finger in the air, then on paper" and questions to ask after each short story, because a kindergartner cannot yet read the instructions. No prior reading ability is assumed at all. A student who finishes should know every letter and sound, be able to blend three-sound words, recognize a small bank of sight words on sight, and write a short sentence without help.

Unit 4: Letters Ss-Zz · Lesson 5

Letter Ww

What this lesson is for

  • The student will practice reading skills related to Letter Ww
  • The student will develop writing and language skills

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Letter Ww

Today we learn the letter W — it makes a breezy, soft sound!

The Letter

  • Uppercase: W
  • Lowercase: w
  • Letter name: say "double-yoo"

The Sound

The letter W makes the /w/ sound — round your lips like you are about to blow a bubble and say: "Wuh! Wuh! Wuh!" Feel your lips move? That is the /w/ sound!

Words That Start With W

  • Water — God made the water on the second day of Creation!
  • Worship — We worship God with our singing and prayers.
  • Wisdom — God gives wisdom to those who ask Him.
  • Word — The Bible is God's Holy Word.

Say each word slowly: "Ww...ater, Ww...orship, Ww...isdom, Ww...ord."

Bible Verse

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally." — James 1:5 (KJV)

Say to your child: "God wants to give us wisdom! We just need to ask Him. That is a wonderful promise from God's Word!" Ask your child: "What is wisdom? How do we ask God for things?"

Tracing Time

Parent: Guide your child's finger first in the air, then on paper.

Uppercase W: Start at the top left. Slant down to a low point, back up to the middle, down to another low point, and back up to the top right. It makes four slanted lines — like little waves! Lowercase w: Same zigzag pattern, just smaller. Down, up, down, up!

Trace W five times. Say "/w/" like a soft wind: "Wuh... Wuh..."

Activity

"Worship W!" Sing the first verse of a simple praise song together. Every time you hear a W word, clap your hands. Ask your child: "Can you think of a W word that praises God?" (Wonderful, worthy, worship, wow!) Finish with a prayer: "Dear God, thank You for Your Word and Your wisdom. Amen."

Homework

Practice writing today's letters or words 3 times each.

Note for the parent

This lesson on Letter Ww should take about 40 minutes. Stay nearby to help with reading and questions. Praise effort and progress.
