Grade 4, item by item
The same 10 items, with the full reasoning behind each quantity recommendation.
Writing & Paper
The workhorses. Almost every subject, almost every day, comes back to a pencil and a sheet of paper.
Pencils
Standard #2 wooden pencils — the single most-used tool in the whole curriculum.
Called for in about 70% of Grade 4 lessons (970 times) — but a pencil is a multi-week tool, not a single-use one, so lesson-mentions don't equal pencils to buy. A standard 12-count box per student comfortably covers a full school year of daily work, plus a few spares for the ones that roll under the couch.
Paper & notebooks
Plain or wide-ruled paper for writing, math work, and drawing. A basic notebook or a stack of loose-leaf sheets both work fine.
Called for 852 times in Grade 4 — since each use is generally a single sheet, that works out to roughly 852 sheets, or about 2 reams of paper (500 sheets each) for the whole stretch. This is the one item on this page where the mention count really is close to the shopping number.
Erasers
Pencil erasers — pink block erasers or eraser caps both work.
456 mentions in Grade 4, but erasers wear down slowly and are easy to share between lessons — one or two block erasers, or a small multi-pack, is plenty for the year, not 456 individual erasers.
Art Supplies
Color for art projects, and a recurring helper for diagrams, maps, and hands-on Bible, history, and science work.
Crayons or colored pencils
A basic 24-count box of either crayons or colored pencils. The lessons ask for “crayons or colored pencils” interchangeably — you only need one of the two, not both.
Needed in about 34% of Grade 4 lessons — mostly Art, and a recurring helper in Bible, History, and Science. One box of either crayons or colored pencils lasts the whole stretch; buying both is a nice-to-have, not a requirement.
Bible & Books
The curriculum itself supplies every reading passage and lesson text. The one book a family needs to add is a Bible.
Bible
A King James Version Bible, or an age-appropriate KJV children's storybook Bible for younger readers.
Referenced 180 times in Grade 4, but every family needs exactly one copy per student (or one shared family copy) — the lessons don't call for more than that.
Cutting & Adhesive
Used with parent help, mostly for Art — cutting, pasting, and simple hands-on projects.
Glue stick
A standard washable glue stick, sized for small hands.
72 mentions, all in Art — glue sticks dry out more than they run out, so 2-3 for the year (one as backup) is sensible, not one per lesson.
Scissors
Blunt-tip, child-safe scissors, used with parent supervision as the lessons direct.
One pair covers every one of the 72 mentions in Grade 4 (all in Art) for the whole stretch.
Movement & PE
Most Physical Education needs nothing but open space (see “you probably already have these” below). A short list of games call for actual equipment.
Balls (assorted)
A soft, all-purpose ball for catching, kicking, and rolling games in PE. A few lessons suggest a rolled-up sock or beanbag as a free substitute.
PE calls for “a ball” in a range of games (35 mentions in Grade 4) — one all-purpose soft or bouncy ball satisfies most of them.
Jump rope
A jump rope sized to the student's height. A length of rope or clothesline is an explicitly offered substitute in a few lessons.
One jump rope covers every one of the 3 mentions in Grade 4.
Hula hoop
A standard kids' hula hoop. One lesson offers a jump rope tied in a loop as a homemade substitute.
One hula hoop covers every one of the 1 mentions in Grade 4.
Stopwatch or timer
Something to time an activity with.
Every one of the 15 mentions in Grade 4 explicitly lists “or a phone” (or a kitchen timer/clock) as the default — so this genuinely needs no purchase. A dedicated kids' stopwatch is a nice-to-have, never a requirement.
Technology
Occasional, supervised use of a device the family already owns — this section is here for completeness, not to sell you a device.
Computer or tablet access
Occasional, supervised use of a family computer, tablet, or phone — for audio playback and a handful of computer-skills lessons.
72 mentions in Grade 4, and every one of them says “with parent permission” or is simply audio playback — this means using a device the family already has, not buying a new one. No specific device or purchase is required.
You probably already have these — no need to buy
These come from 57 different real phrasings in the lesson files (103 mentions total) — mostly Physical Education asking for open space, comfortable clothes, or simply nothing at all. None of it is a purchase, and none of it is linked below on purpose.
- Nothing at all (17 lesson-mentions — e.g. “No equipment needed — just room to move”; “Depends on chosen activity”; “Whatever matches your chosen skill”)
- Comfortable clothes & shoes (24 lesson-mentions — e.g. “Comfortable clothes”; “Comfortable walking shoes”)
- Open space to move (1 lesson-mentions — e.g. “Household/yard items to build a course (chairs, cones, a board, or a rope)”)
- The kitchen, pantry, or a snack (6 lesson-mentions — e.g. “5-6 empty water bottles or cups as pins”; “A cup or water bottle”; “A water bottle”)
- A parent, sibling, or partner to join in (3 lesson-mentions — e.g. “A parent to spot”; “A pool or safe swimming water WITH ADULT SUPERVISION (optional)”; “A small object to hand off (if with a partner)”)
- Everyday odds & ends (52 lesson-mentions — e.g. “Rope or string for a mini net”; “A soft surface: grass, a mat, or thick carpet”; “A soft, clear surface: grass, a mat, or a large room”)
