Skill-by-skill coaching in soccer, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and running, plus health, fitness, and character.
About this course
Fourth grade is the year this course starts teaching actual sports properly. Three full units are devoted to soccer, basketball, and volleyball, and each one works through the rules and the playing area, then the individual skills one at a time: dribbling, passing, shooting and defending in soccer; chest and bounce passes, layups, free throws, and rebounding in basketball; the underhand serve, bump, set, spike, and rotation in volleyball. A gymnastics unit teaches safety first, then the forward roll, backward roll, cartwheel, handstand, balance beam, and tumbling sequences. A running unit covers form, sprinting, distance pacing, interval training, relays, and cross-country. Rounding out the year are fitness fundamentals (the five components of fitness, goal setting, and fitness testing), health and nutrition (food groups, healthy plate, vitamins, hydration, food labels, sleep, hygiene, avoiding sickness, and a short lesson on emotional health that points to a trusted adult, prayer, and Scripture), flexibility and core strength, individual sports (track and field, tennis, badminton, jump rope, disc golf, bowling, hiking), outdoor games, and a ten-lesson unit on sportsmanship and character.
There are 108 lessons across eleven units, sized from eight to twelve lessons each, and every lesson has a real title rather than a number. Each is planned for about 30 minutes: a short prayer, six minutes of introduction, fifteen minutes of doing the skill, and a six-minute review. Every lesson ends with a ten-question quiz that grades itself, and a KJV verse is attached to each one.
One thing to know going in: the written portion in fourth grade is short, usually a single paragraph of about fifty words giving the key coaching points, such as which foot to jump off for a right-side layup or where to place your hands for a cartwheel. That means the lesson time really is meant for practice, and it also means you will be the one supplying the correction and the encouragement. Equipment expectations are higher than in earlier grades: a soccer ball, a basketball and some kind of hoop, a volleyball and net or a rope stand-in, and mats or soft grass for the gymnastics unit. Families without a hoop or net can scale the drills down to a wall and an open yard, and the individual-sports unit is written so most of it works with a jump rope, a hula hoop, and a walking trail.

One whole lesson, exactly as it comes
This is a real lesson taken from the middle of the course — the teaching text, the practice, the homework, and the first three quiz questions with their answers. It is not a marketing excerpt.
Unit 6: Gymnastics and Movement · Lesson 5
Handstand
30 minutesA clear wall with soft flooring in front of itA parent to spot
What this lesson is for
Practice a wall-supported handstand with correct hand placement and body alignment.
Hold a wall handstand for 5-10 seconds, 3 times.
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1 Corinthians 6:19
A handstand means balancing upside down on your hands. Place your hands shoulder-width apart on the mat and kick one leg up at a time. Keep your arms straight and your body tight like a board. Always practice with a wall or a spotter until you can balance on your own.
Homework
Practice the wall handstand 2-3 more times this week ONLY with a parent supervising and spotting.
Note for the parent
Today's lesson covers Handstand. Estimated time: 30 minutes. Encourage independent work but be available for questions.
The first three of this lesson's 10 questions
What is a handstand in gymnastics?
A skill where you balance on one foot while raising one hand
Balancing completely upside down on your hands with the body fully extended vertically
A headstand using the forehead as the third point of contact
Pushing up from a lying position into an elevated arm position
Show the answer
Answer: Balancing completely upside down on your hands with the body fully extended vertically
This question tests understanding of key concepts from the lesson on Handstand.
How wide apart should your hands be placed on the mat for a handstand?
As wide as possible for maximum stability
Touching each other in a diamond shape
Completely together with thumbs touching
About shoulder-width apart — wide enough for stability but not so wide you collapse
Show the answer
Answer: About shoulder-width apart — wide enough for stability but not so wide you collapse
This question tests understanding of key concepts from the lesson on Handstand.
Why should your arms be kept straight during a handstand?
Straight arms create a rigid structure that can bear your body weight — bent arms collapse under the load and cause you to fall immediately
Straight arms are required by gymnastics rules
Straight arms help you steer direction during the handstand
Arm position does not affect handstand stability
Show the answer
Answer: Straight arms create a rigid structure that can bear your body weight — bent arms collapse under the load and cause you to fall immediately
This question tests understanding of key concepts from the lesson on Handstand.
Another 7 questions follow in the lesson itself, each one graded the moment it is answered.
