Reading a Bible Passage in Spanish: The Sermon on the Mount
Reading Scripture in Spanish is one of the most valuable things you can do as a Spanish student. Today you will read a key passage from the Sermon on the Mount (El Sermón del Monte) in Spanish and practice deep comprehension.
Pre-Reading: The Beatitudes Vocabulary
| Spanish (from Mateo 5) | English | |---|---| | bienaventurados | blessed | | los pobres de espíritu | the poor in spirit | | el reino de los cielos | the kingdom of heaven | | los que lloran | those who mourn | | serán consolados | will be comforted | | los mansos | the meek | | heredarán la tierra | will inherit the earth | | los misericordiosos | the merciful | | alcanzarán misericordia | will obtain mercy | | los pacificadores | the peacemakers | | serán llamados hijos de Dios | will be called children of God |
Text: Las Bienaventuranzas (Mateo 5:3-12, RVR1960)
Language Analysis
Grammar focus — Future tense: The Beatitudes use the future tense to describe promises. Find all the future tense verbs (ending in -rán, -rá) in the passage and list them with their English meaning.
Word study: The word bienaventurados literally means "well-spoken-of" or "deeply happy." It comes from bien (well) + aventurado (favored). How does this meaning enrich your understanding of "blessed"?
Comprehension and Reflection
- How many beatitudes are there?
- Which beatitude speaks of those who are persecuted?
- What promise is given to the merciful?
- Choose one beatitude and write a 3-4 sentence reflection (in Spanish) on what it means for your life.
Bible Connection
"Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." — Matthew 5:8
"Bienaventurados los de limpio corazón, porque ellos verán a Dios."
Reading the Sermon on the Mount in Spanish reminds you that Jesus' words are for all nations, in all languages. The Beatitudes describe the upside-down kingdom of God — where the meek inherit the earth, the mourning are comforted, and the persecuted are blessed. These are not merely poetic ideas; they are God's promises.
