Spanish

Capstone Spanish: professional and ministry Spanish, Golden Age literature, translation, and AP exam preparation, in 144 lessons.

About this course

The language taught here is Spanish, and twelfth grade is written as the end of the whole sequence. Its opening units are titled in Spanish, and the vocabulary work is about precision rather than coverage: register and style, connotation versus denotation, advanced collocations, neologisms from the technology age, regional dialect differences, word formation, Golden Age vocabulary, and theological terms for discussing doctrine exactly. Grammar assumes everything is already known and works on mastery and style, covering every subjunctive tense at once, concessive and temporal clauses, three ways to form the passive, nominalization for academic prose, discourse connectors, advanced punctuation, sentence elegance, the errors advanced learners still make, and a full lesson on translation theory that lays out formal versus dynamic equivalence, cites Nida, and works through the places where English and Spanish structures genuinely diverge.

The applied units are the most practical in the sequence. Your student prepares for the job interview, the medical consultation from both the patient and the provider side, legal assistance, the business meeting, pastoral conversations of comfort, bilingual teaching, community service, intercultural conflict resolution, emergency communication under pressure, interpreting, and cross-cultural ministry. The literature unit revisits Cervantes and adds Golden Age poetry with the Gongora and Quevedo quarrel, the colonial voices of Inca Garcilaso and Bartolome de las Casas, Sor Juana, Becquer, Marti and Dario, Neruda, Garcia Marquez, Borges with the questions of faith his work raises, Vargas Llosa and Allende, Lope de Vega and La vida es sueno, and closes by asking how a Christian should read literature at all. The culture unit is a country-by-country survey ending with Spanish as a language of mission, and the final unit turns outward toward college Spanish, campus ministry, healthcare, business, keeping the language after graduation, prayer and worship in two languages, and a closing lesson that is a graduation blessing over the Aaronic benediction in both English and the Reina-Valera.

There are 144 lessons in 12 units of 12, at about 40 minutes each. Lessons are long, densely written, and often set out with Spanish headings and bilingual examples, ending with a substantial writing or analysis task and a ten-question quiz that grades itself. Four lessons are devoted to AP exam preparation covering reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Read that last one carefully before deciding: the listening lesson teaches real strategies, such as note-taking, tolerating ambiguity, and recognizing Caribbean, Andean, Castilian, and Mexican accents, but it can only tell your student to go listen to Spanish news, podcasts, and video elsewhere, because this course contains no audio at all. The same applies to the speaking tasks. If your student is aiming at the AP exam or at professional interpreting, treat this year as thorough preparation for the reading and writing sections and plan separately for listening and speech. It assumes several years of Spanish, fluency with the subjunctive and the compound tenses, and comfort reading literature in the original.
