Body Language and Nonverbal Communication
Research consistently shows that a significant portion of communication is nonverbal — communicated through body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, gestures, posture, and eye contact rather than through words alone. Words say what we mean; body language often reveals how we actually feel. A student who says "I understand" while avoiding eye contact and slumping in their chair is communicating something different from one who says the same words while sitting up and looking directly at the speaker.
Key elements of nonverbal communication include: eye contact (shows engagement, respect, and confidence — too little suggests dishonesty or inattention; too much can feel aggressive), posture (open, upright posture conveys confidence and openness; closed posture — crossed arms, hunched shoulders — can signal defensiveness or disengagement), facial expressions (the face communicates emotion powerfully and often involuntarily), gestures (hand movements that emphasize or illustrate verbal content), proximity (the distance between speakers — different cultures have different comfortable distances for conversation), and tone of voice (the same words can mean very different things depending on tone: "That's interesting" can be genuine or sarcastic).
Christians should be especially attentive to the congruence between words and body language. Proverbs 6:12-13 describes the wicked man as one who "speaketh with his feet... winketh with his eyes... speaketh with his fingers" — a picture of communication designed to deceive. Our goal is the opposite: honest, unified communication in which our words, tone, and body language all tell the same true story.
