Context Clues
Today's Bible verse: "The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple." — Psalm 119:130
Say to your child: "Have you ever read a word you didn't know? Today we learn a superpower: how to figure out a word's meaning from the words around it. This is called using context clues."
What are context clues? When you find an unfamiliar word, the sentence around it often gives hints — called context clues — about what the word means. There are four kinds:
1. Definition clue — the author explains the word right in the sentence: "The disciples, meaning the followers of Jesus, went to Jerusalem."
2. Synonym clue — a word nearby means almost the same thing: "The weary, tired traveler sat down to rest." (weary ≈ tired)
3. Antonym clue — a nearby word means the opposite: "Unlike the noisy city, the village was serene." (serene = opposite of noisy = quiet)
4. Example clue — examples show what category the word belongs to: "Citrus fruits — oranges, lemons, limes — are sour."
Ask your child: "In this sentence — 'The ravenous, starving crowd ate every crumb' — what do you think ravenous means? What clue helped you?" (Starving is a synonym clue.)
Activity together: Read each sentence. Find the context clue. Write a meaning in your own words:
- "The nimble, quick-footed deer leaped over the stream."
- "Ruth was diligent; she worked from morning until evening without stopping."
- "Unlike his brave brother, Timothy was timid."
- "Grains such as wheat, barley, and millet were grown in Israel."
Writing practice: Write two sentences of your own that include a context clue for a new word.
Wrap-up — Ask your child: "What are the four kinds of context clues? Which one did we use in the Ruth sentence?" Great detective work today!
