History & Geography

A capstone year: the whole survey retold through case studies, plus adult civics and personal finance.

About this course

Twelfth grade is written for a student about to leave home. The first eight units are a final ordered pass over the whole field. American history runs the Constitution and Bill of Rights, westward expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era and the First World War, the Depression and the Second, Cold War America, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam and Watergate, and the years from Reagan to the present. World civilizations covers the ancient world comparatively, the rise of Christianity, Islam, the Middle Ages, the Reformation, colonialism, the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment, the French Revolution, nationalism and imperialism, Nazism and Communism, decolonization, and globalization. Geography goes region by region across the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, East and South Asia, Europe, Latin America, Russia and Central Asia, and North America. Government works through the Constitution article by article, then the branches, federalism, civil liberties, the Fourteenth Amendment, campaigns, and foreign policy. Economics runs from scarcity through macroeconomics and the Federal Reserve to budgeting, debt, investing, stewardship, and entrepreneurship.

The last seven units are the strongest part of the course. Rather than repeating the first pass, they retell the same material through case studies and specific stories, and the writing is noticeably better for it. Citizenship becomes Zacchaeus on taxation, Jethro's advice on tiers of authority, Runnymede and the jury box, Esther on courage without a platform, and Nehemiah on serving in the palace while building the wall. American history becomes the machinery of western land settlement, sharecropping and the Chinese Exclusion Act, Tet and the Watergate tapes. Economics becomes Joseph's grain silos as a case for government planning, divided Germany and Korea as a natural experiment in economic systems, and the 50 30 20 budget with sinking funds and emergency funds. Culture becomes Bezalel and the theology of craft, hymns as theology, and the social science on family order.

There are 180 lessons in 15 units of twelve, at about 50 minutes each. Every lesson closes with a Reflect prompt and an Analyze or Engage task, which range from a one-page personal civic plan to interviewing a grandparent about extended family. The ten-question multiple-choice quiz at the end of each lesson grades itself; the writing and interview prompts are yours to review. The practical bent is real: one lesson walks through registering to vote, filing a Form 1040, responding to a jury summons, and choosing one community institution to commit to for a year. The tone is careful with contested material, naming where researchers disagree, where a famous study has been questioned, and where a statistical pattern is not a verdict on any individual. This grade assumes the prior high school work and a student ready to be argued with rather than lectured at.

Matthew 5:9

Poverty and Global Development: Christian Engagement

Approximately 700 million people live on less than $2.15 a day — extreme poverty by the World Bank's definition. This represents enormous suffering. It also represents dramatic progress: in 1990, nearly 2 billion people lived in extreme poverty. Economic development, trade, and the spread of basic institutions have lifted more people out of poverty faster than any other process in human history.

Understanding causes: Poverty is not random. It is sustained by a predictable set of factors: corrupt governance, insecure property rights, lack of access to markets and financial systems, disease burden, and the destruction of family and community institutions. Aid alone rarely solves poverty and can sometimes make it worse by undermining local markets and creating dependency. The most effective poverty reduction has come through economic growth enabled by functioning institutions.

Christian missions and development: Organizations like World Vision, Compassion International, and thousands of local missions have demonstrated that effective development must address the whole person — physical, relational, and spiritual. Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert's When Helping Hurts argues that much well-intentioned Christian charity actually harms recipients by treating them as objects of pity rather than image-bearers with dignity and agency.

"He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again" (Proverbs 19:17).

The poor are not problems to be managed — they are neighbors, made in God's image, with gifts and potential that need enabling institutions and relationships rather than top-down charity.

Reflect: What distinguishes effective Christian development work from charity that creates dependency?

Engage: Research one effective Christian development organization. What is their theory of change? How do they measure impact?

Homework

Answer the review questions about Current events - lesson 7.

Note for the parent

Today's lesson covers Current Events - Lesson 7. Estimated time: 50 minutes. Encourage independent work but be available for questions.

The first three of this lesson's 10 questions

How many people does the World Bank define as living in extreme poverty, using the threshold of $2.15 per day?

  1. 100 million
  2. 400 million
  3. 700 million
  4. 1 billion
Show the answer

Answer: 700 million

The lesson says poverty represents both enormous suffering AND dramatic progress. What statistic supports the progress claim?

  1. Global life expectancy has risen by 20 years since 1990
  2. In 1990, nearly 2 billion people lived in extreme poverty — far more than today's 700 million
  3. Literacy rates have doubled in Sub-Saharan Africa since 2000
  4. Child mortality has been cut in half since 1970
Show the answer

Answer: In 1990, nearly 2 billion people lived in extreme poverty — far more than today's 700 million

The lesson identifies a predictable set of factors that sustain poverty. Which of the following is listed?

  1. Excessive foreign aid, overpopulation, and tropical climate
  2. High taxes, democratic government, and free markets
  3. Corrupt governance, insecure property rights, lack of market access, disease burden, and breakdown of family institutions
  4. Cultural resistance to education, geographic isolation, and lack of natural resources
Show the answer

Answer: Corrupt governance, insecure property rights, lack of market access, disease burden, and breakdown of family institutions

Another 7 questions follow in the lesson itself, each one graded the moment it is answered.
