What Is Culture?
Culture is the shared pattern of human life — the beliefs, customs, arts, language, values, and traditions that a group of people develop and pass on through generations. Culture is what makes a community recognizable as itself. Every human society has culture; it is part of what it means to be made in God's image (Genesis 1:27).
Elements of Culture
Culture includes many dimensions:
- Language — the words and symbols people use to communicate
- Religion and worldview — beliefs about God, reality, right and wrong
- Family structures — how people organize their households and kinship
- Arts — music, visual art, literature, architecture, dance
- Customs and traditions — how people celebrate, mourn, eat, and mark seasons
- Government and law — how people organize authority and justice
- Economics — how people produce, trade, and distribute resources
- Education — how knowledge and values are passed to the next generation
Culture Is Not Neutral
Every culture reflects a worldview — a set of assumptions about ultimate reality. Christian cultures are shaped by belief in the Creator God, human dignity, sin and redemption, and moral accountability. Secular cultures are shaped by naturalism, individual autonomy, and relativism. Culture shapes people deeply — which is why Deuteronomy 6:6-7 instructs parents to teach God's Word "when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way."
Culture and the Fall
Because all humans are fallen, every culture has both beauty (reflecting God's image) and brokenness (reflecting sin). No culture is pure; no culture is entirely corrupt. Christians evaluate culture with wisdom — enjoying what is good, rejecting what is sinful, and transforming what can be redeemed.
The Great Commission and Culture
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations" (Matthew 28:19). The gospel does not destroy cultures — it purifies and elevates them, calling every nation to bring its cultural gifts into the service of Christ.
