Lesson 7: Use Logical Reasoning
Say to your child: "Today we use our THINKING CAPS for logical reasoning. This means we use what we KNOW to eliminate wrong answers and figure out what MUST be true."
What is Logical Reasoning? Logical reasoning is step-by-step thinking that rules out impossibilities until only the correct answer remains.
Problem 1 — Logic Puzzle: "Anna, Beth, and Clara each have a different pet: a dog, a cat, and a fish. Anna does not like dogs. Beth is allergic to fish. What pet does each girl have?"
Think step by step:
- Anna: NOT a dog. Options: cat or fish.
- Beth: NOT a fish. Options: dog or cat.
- Since Beth must have the dog or cat, and Anna needs cat or fish...
- If Beth has the dog, Anna has the cat (not dog ✓), and Clara has the fish. CHECK: all rules satisfied! ✓
Beth has the dog, Anna has the cat, Clara has the fish.
Ask your child: "Could Anna have the fish? Could Beth have the fish?" (Anna could have the fish. Beth cannot.)
Say to your child: "Good logical reasoning is like being a detective. We don't guess — we ELIMINATE."
Hands-On Activity — 3-Object Logic: Use 3 toys. Write clues on strips of paper. Your child reads the clues and arranges the toys correctly. Example clues: "The ball is not in the middle." "The block is to the right of the car." "The car is not on the left."
Number Logic Problem: "I am an even number. I am greater than 10. I am less than 15. I am not 12." (Answer: 14.)
Ask your child: "What would happen if we ignored one of the clues?" (We might get the wrong answer!)
Bible Verse: "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD." — Isaiah 1:18 (KJV)
Say to your child: "God invites us to REASON with Him! He doesn't just ask us to believe blindly — He gives us evidence and asks us to think. Logical reasoning is a gift from God for understanding both His world and His Word."
Wrap-Up: Create a simple 3-person logic puzzle together for a sibling to solve.
