Mathematics

Fractions and decimals in all four operations, plus ratios, percents, probability, geometry, and two-step equations.

About this course

Fifth grade finishes fractions and decimals and opens the door to pre-algebra. The year begins with place value through the billions, exponents and powers of ten, prime and composite numbers, prime factorization, greatest common factor, least common multiple, and the order of operations. Those tools are then put to work: a fraction unit takes your student through unlike denominators, mixed numbers, multiplying fractions and mixed numbers, and dividing fractions by the reciprocal, and a decimals unit runs through thousandths, rounding, and all four operations including dividing a decimal by a decimal. From there the course moves into ratios, equivalent ratios, unit rates, solving proportions, and scale drawings, then a full percent unit covering conversion among fractions, decimals, and percents, percent of a number, percent of change, sales tax and discounts, tips, and simple interest with the I = PRT formula.

The second half covers geometry (angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, radius and diameter, congruent and similar figures, translations, reflections, rotations, symmetry, and the coordinate plane), measurement and unit conversion with perimeter, the area of rectangles and triangles, and the volume of rectangular prisms, data and statistics through mean, median, mode, range, outliers, stem-and-leaf plots, and an introduction to box-and-whisker plots, a full unit on probability including sample space, theoretical versus experimental probability, and independent and dependent events, and an algebra unit with variables and expressions, one-step and two-step equations, inequalities, graphing on a number line, and input-output tables. The year closes with a strategies unit and a review unit.

The course is 122 lessons across 12 units, which is fewer than a full 180-day year, so you have room to spread it over more days, add drill, or slow down on the harder units without falling behind. Each lesson is planned for about 40 minutes. The writing here shifts toward a textbook your student can read independently: a short introduction, a list of key terms, several fully worked examples laid out line by line, and a closing KJV verse tied to the topic. Every lesson ends with a ten-question quiz that grades itself. To be ready, your student should be fluent in the multiplication and division facts, able to multiply multi-digit numbers and divide with a one-digit divisor, comfortable with equivalent fractions, and familiar with decimals through hundredths. Pencil, paper, and an eraser are the listed materials.

Coordinate Plane Introduction

The coordinate plane (also called the Cartesian plane) is a grid formed by two perpendicular number lines. It allows us to describe the exact location of any point using an ordered pair of numbers.

Key Terms:

  • x-axis — the horizontal number line
  • y-axis — the vertical number line
  • Origin — the point where the axes cross; coordinates (0, 0)
  • Ordered pair (x, y) — a pair of numbers giving the exact position of a point; x is horizontal, y is vertical
  • Quadrant — one of the four regions of the coordinate plane

The Four Quadrants: | Quadrant | x-value | y-value | |----------|---------|---------| | I | positive (+) | positive (+) | | II | negative (−) | positive (+) | | III | negative (−) | negative (−) | | IV | positive (+) | negative (−) |

Reading an ordered pair: In (3, 5), start at the origin, move 3 units right (x = 3), then 5 units up (y = 5). Always go horizontal first, then vertical.

Example 1: `math Plot point A(4, 2): start at origin, move 4 right, 2 up → Quadrant I. Plot point B(−3, 1): move 3 left, 1 up → Quadrant II. `

Example 2: `math Name the quadrant for point (−2, −5). x is negative, y is negative → Quadrant III. `

René Descartes developed the coordinate system in the 1600s. By combining algebra and geometry, he changed mathematics forever. This is another example of how God gifted certain people with the ability to see hidden patterns in creation and develop tools that benefit all of humanity.

Guided practice

  1. The horizontal number line on a coordinate plane is called the ___.

Show the steps and the answer

X comes before Y in the alphabet, and the x-axis is horizontal (left-right).

    Answer: x-axis

  2. What are the coordinates of the origin?

Show the steps and the answer

The origin is where the x-axis and y-axis meet, at zero on both.

    Answer: (0, 0)

  3. Point (3, 4) is in which quadrant?

Show the steps and the answer

Both coordinates are positive. Quadrant I is the upper right, where x and y are both positive.

    Answer: I
