Grade 5 Handwriting
Joined cursive alongside confident print. Steady slant and consistent letter height.
Choose a hand
14 words · 12 sentences · 10 verses. Every sheet prints on letter paper with proper three-line rules. Trace the grey letters, then write on the empty lines.
For the parent
By fifth grade the hand should be doing the work, not the whole arm. Sit tall, both feet on the floor, and let the paper tilt slightly — to the left for a right-handed writer, to the right for a left-handed writer — so the arm can swing along the line instead of curling around it.
Slant is the mark of a fifth-grade hand. Every letter should lean the same direction by the same amount. Finish a line, then hold the page at arm's length: if the tall letters look like a row of fence posts leaning together, the slant is steady.
Height is the second mark. Tall letters (b, d, f, h, k, l, t) reach the top line; short letters (a, c, e, m, n, o) fill only the middle space; tails (g, j, p, q, y) drop below the baseline. Mixed heights are what make writing look restless.
In cursive, the joining stroke matters as much as the letter. Let the pencil come up out of one letter and travel into the next without lifting. Watch the tricky joins after b, o, v, and w — they leave from the top, not the baseline.
Print and cursive are two tools, not two grades of skill. Print is for labels, forms, and maps; cursive is for letters, copywork, and anything written at length. Practice both this year and keep both neat.
Copy the Scripture verses slowly and read each one aloud before you write it. Copying a verse well is a small act of care for the words themselves, and words worth copying are words worth remembering.
Space is part of handwriting. Leave about the width of your smallest fingertip between words, and a little more after a period. Crowded writing is hard to read even when every letter is formed correctly.
Speed comes last. Write neatly first, then a little faster each week, and stop the moment neatness slips. A page finished quickly and read with difficulty has not saved anyone any time.
